Salem - Matthew Franklin Caruth IV, 71, of Salem, passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at his home.
Matt was born on August 29, 1954, in DeKalb, Illinois, the son of Matthew Franklin Caruth III and Jane (Bartley) Caruth. He married Tina Cherry on July 16, 1983, in DeKalb, Illinois, and together they shared 42 years in marriage.
Survivors include his wife, Tina Caruth of Salem; a daughter, Natasha Caruth of St. Louis, Missouri; a son, Matthew Franklin Caruth V of Salem; a grandson, Silas Baltzell; brother, Dennis Markwort; and a special friend of many years, Craig Sheffield.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew and Jane, and a sister, Izabelle Caruth.
Matt honorably served his country in the United States Army, where he was a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War.
He was the owner and operator of Salem Hardware in Salem where he worked alongside his wife for 31 years. He had a passion for classic cars and race cars. In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing.
In keeping with Matt's wishes, there will be no public services. Memorial contributions can be made to his grandsons' education and will be received at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem, who is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences and memories can be left at www.CrouseFH.com.
